Description
The Department of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (WUSM) is currently seeking a dynamic and impactful clinical leader with outstanding demonstrated ability to enhance clinical operations and services and grow the department’s adult outpatient services.
This is a rare opportunity to advance the adult outpatient mental health care missions of one of the country’s leading psychiatry departments. The Department of Psychiatry is a national leader in providing high-impact mental health, in research, ranked #6 in NIH funding, and in education with high-quality residency and child fellowship programs.
The Medical Director, Adult Outpatient Psychiatry will oversee clinical operations during a period of growth, expansion, and implementation of innovative models of high-quality mental health care. The ideal candidate will thrive under the opportunity to strategically participate in the growth and transformation of the department, including major clinical initiatives aimed at improving access.
The position reports to the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and will serve to develop and meet the department’s goals and objectives related to adult outpatient psychiatric care. In the academic year 2021, WUSM psychiatrists saw 3,700 admissions and 22,000 outpatient visits. In 2022, outpatient visits increased to approximately 26,000. The department also contracts with community agencies to provide additional services to the St. Louis region.
The Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Services include general psychiatry clinics as well as specialty clinics, including geriatric psychiatry, cancer psychiatry, employee and family services, perinatal mental health, treatment resistant depression and early recognition clinics. Outpatient treatments include Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, (rTMS), esketamine/ketamine, vagus nerve stimulation, (VNS) and electroconvulsive shock treatment, (ECT). The adult psychiatry outpatient services include 13 faculty psychiatrists, 3 faculty psychologists, training opportunities for 13 general psychiatry residents per year, 1 staff nurse practitioner, 1 staff physician assistant, 5 staff therapists and 1 registered staff nurse.
It is expected that outpatient services will grow considerably over the next five years; managing this growth while maintaining exceptional, high-quality patient care and services and efficient clinic operations will be a key role for the Medical Director.
WUSM psychiatrists provide a wide array of comprehensive patient care services, from diagnosis through treatment. Patients are seen at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital – both nationally recognized for excellence – as well as at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. WUSM psychiatrists support 96 adult psychiatric inpatient beds within the BJC system as well as 14 child & adolescent inpatient beds located at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Qualified candidates will possess a MD, MD/PhD, or DO degree and hold or be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Missouri. Candidates should be certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Psychiatry and have at least five years of demonstrated success in establishing, leading and managing innovative models of high quality adult outpatient mental health care.
Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Washington University School of Medicine provides care to the greater St. Louis community, a highly diverse patient population that includes many individuals from systemically marginalized and medically underserved backgrounds.
