Description

Reporting to the Director of Mental Health Service, the Psychiatrist is responsible for providing psychiatric care to a diverse student population, employing evidence-based practice. S/he functions as a member of a multi-disciplinary mental health team, consisting of clinical/counseling psychologists, clinical social workers, and licensed counselors. The Psychiatrist should have a deep appreciation for a collaborative care model, partnering with the Medical Clinics, Wellness and Health Promotion, and The Lighthouse Program, and a commitment to advancing the divisional priorities of quality, access and inclusion, and mattering and belonging.

Job Responsibilities

Direct Client Care - 80%

Provides psychiatric services including patient evaluation, medication management, consultation, psychotherapy and medical liaison services appropriate for a university setting, both in-person and through telehealth, with an investment in a short-term model of treatment. Participates in on-call and after-hours as needed. All psychiatric services will be provided in accordance with the standards and ethics of the American Psychiatric Association and the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners. 

Documentation & Administrative Duties - 15%

Maintains confidentiality and documents all patient contacts accurately and in a timely manner. Participates in quality improvement and assessment activities, including training, studies and peer review. Engages in staff meetings and collaborative care teams.  Participates in intern and resident training as needed/appropriate. Maintains collaborative relationships with staff in other SHC units aimed at enhancing service to students and the campus community. 

Other Duties - 5%

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD degree from an accredited institution of medical education.
  • Completion of an accredited residency in Psychiatry.

Minimum Certifications/Licenses

  • Must possess an unrestricted license to practice Psychiatry independently in Louisiana.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical experience working with college-aged/young adult population. Experience in crisis management. Experience working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary health/mental health center. Theoretical understanding of multicultural issues in mental health. Experience working with an eating disorder population.

Preferred Certifications/Licenses

  • Board certified in Psychiatry

Additional Requirements

This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
